What to pack for your first long trail run

Trail cap, socks, tee, electrolyte sachets and a bottle laid out on stone (demo photo)

Your first long trail run is mostly about time on your feet. You will move slower than on the road, the climbs will take longer than you expect, and the nearest shop is not around the corner. Lay this out the night before so the morning is easy.

On your body

  • A tee that dries fast. The Trail Tee is a 120 g per square metre recycled polyester knit with flat seams, so it sits quietly under a pack strap. It has a reflective mark on the back for when the light goes early.
  • Shorts with a pocket that holds still. The Running Shorts have a brushed liner and three pockets, including a zipped back pocket for your phone.
  • Socks you trust. The Running Socks 3-Pack is a merino blend with a seamless toe and an arch band, so nothing slides around on a wet descent.
  • A cap. The Trail Cap weighs 60 g, has UPF 50 and a sweat band, and the brim folds into a pocket.

In your hands or your vest

  • Water. The Insulated Bottle holds 750 ml and keeps it cold for 24 hours. On a loop with no refill, plan on carrying more than you think you need.
  • Electrolytes. One stick of Electrolyte Mix in 500 ml of water gives you 500 mg of sodium and 200 mg of potassium with 3 g of sugar.
  • A wind layer. The Ridgeline Trail Vest blocks wind on exposed ridges and packs into its own chest pocket.

Keep it simple

If you would rather not pick each piece, the Trail Starter Kit puts the tee, cap, bottle and socks in one box for $120, which saves you $10 on the separate prices. You can also build your own kit from three or more items.
